Introduction to the healing qualities of trees

Why are trees important?

Trees produce oxygen and take in carbon dioxide.

Beside these, they play vital roles in the ecosystem in many other ways;

Trees provide food and shelter to many species, stabilise the soil and capture rainwater.

In every ancient culture, trees were considered honourable and were used for medical purposes.

Statistics:

One tree absorbs about 48 pounds of carbon dioxide and produces about 260 pounds of oxygen per year. However, the amount produced can vary; older trees produce more oxygen than the younger ones.

It is estimated that 1 mature tree can absorb 1000 gallons of rainwater per year. This is why we need to plant more trees to prevent floods and you can see why we need to protect the older trees.

We also use trees for production of furniture and paper. You can look around at the groceries today and you will see how many foods that we consume every day actually come from the trees. We all know how wonderful it feels to rest under the shades of an old tree on a hot sunny day…

Healing with the trees

According to modern researches, the physical and mental health benefits are evident that comes from the closeness of these creatures.

Studies show that patients recover quicker with a view of trees and natural landscape.

Time spent in a natural environment can reduce stress, improve concentration and have a restorative effect on the mind. Spending time in nature with the trees is even more beneficial in 2021, as the nation-wide lockdown continues.

Through the history, artists, Saints and poets were largely inspired by forests and trees.

Tree medicine

The leaves, the fruits, the bark and roots of certain trees have been used as a medicine for thousands of years. Please note that not all trees have the same medicinal qualities and some parts can be toxic or even extremely poisonous.

Precautions:

Before you start making your medicine, please make sure that:

You know without doubt that the tree is not a poisonous one.

Make sure that it is not in a highly protected area where it might be illegal to forage.

The tree is not located near to a polluted area (for example, of a chemical factory)

Never peel off the bark from the trunk, as it may kill the tree. Always collect the bark from a thin twig.

It is recommended to protect your hands with a glove.

Conclusion

The holistic wisdom of the old times has a true Renaissance today.

In the ancient times, humans had a much closer relationship to the natural world than we do nowadays. Trees and plants were part of the folklore and legendary creatures have been told dwelling in the forests and mountains.

After the age of enlightenment, the industrial revolution and the beginning of the scientific era, this relationship seemed to fade.

Interestingly, despite the industrialisation and the challenges of the pollution and climate change, more and more of us seek refuge in wild places and try to rebuild the seemingly lost connection with the beings of nature. People take action or join together in groups to protect wild places and you can make a difference too!
